A cozy home for bats: City seeks locations for bat boxes

More and more residents are making their homes more energy-efficient and insulating them. This is a positive trend that the municipality is proud of. However, for bats, this means that their natural roosts are disappearing. To provide this protected species with an alternative, the municipality is working with a nature contractor to identify suitable locations for bat boxes. Residents who Requirements the Requirements can now apply.
An appreciation for nature
Alderman van den Boom: "Together, we’re creating a green and animal-friendly municipality." She emphasizes the importance of this initiative: “As a municipality, we promote sustainability and energy conservation, but we also care about nature. Bats play an important role in our ecosystem, for example by eating insects. By creating new habitats, we ensure that they are not displaced. We hope that residents will sign up to offer these animals a safe place.”
The property must Requirements
Not all homes are suitable for a bat box. The municipality’s website lists all Requirements. For example, only corner houses, semi-detached houses, or single-family homes built before 1990 are suitable. Another criterion is that the home must not have been retrofitted with insulation. The box is always installed on the end of the house.

A renewable energy contractor will assess whether the homes are suitable. In doing so, they will also consider the distribution of solar panels across the municipality (
), wind direction, and the sun’s position. The municipality will cover the cost of the panels and their installation. There will be no cost to residents. The contractor hopes to install the first panels by May 1, 2025.
