Social security number
What is it?
Everyone has a unique personal identification number: the citizen service number (BSN). You do not need to apply for this number. If you are registered with a Dutch municipality, you will receive it automatically.
You can use your citizen service number at any government office, such as the municipality. Healthcare providers and health insurers also use the citizen service number.
Do you live outside the Netherlands? You can register as a non-resident at an RNI desk. You will then receive a citizen service number.
