Message from Mayor Vincent van Neerbos

It was with disappointment and concern that I learned of the serious disturbances that occurred during the fair in Dreumel. During my absence, the municipality was well represented by Deputy Mayor Marieke van den Boom, who was closely involved in the initial handling of the events.

The images and stories that have since emerged via social media, app groups, and the media show just how much of an impact this evening had on residents, visitors, business owners, and volunteers. What should have been a festive tradition ended for many in turmoil, fear, and disappointment.

My thoughts are with the injured and with everyone who felt unsafe. I would also like to express my appreciation for the volunteers, fairground operators, security guards, law enforcement officers, and emergency responders who had to carry out their duties under difficult circumstances.

In particular, I would like to mention Jan and Mariëlle Bouman and the team at Brasserie, at Jan’s table. They worked with great dedication and enthusiasm to organize a wonderful fair for Dreumel. It is particularly painful that their efforts have been overshadowed in this way. I respect the responsibility they subsequently took on.

Let one thing be clear: violence and intimidation have no place at a village festival. A small group has undermined the enjoyment and sense of safety of many people. At the same time, I urge everyone not to jump to conclusions. The police are investigating the events and must be given the space to do so.

I also urge everyone to remain calm. Do not let anger and emotions lead to further divisions or to taking the law into your own hands. Now more than ever, it is important that we continue to treat one another with respect, refrain from judging each other based on rumors, and maintain confidence in the work of the police and the justice system.

Those responsible for causing these disturbances must know that this will not go unpunished. As mayor, I will work together with the police, the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and our partners to ensure that those responsible for these disturbances are identified. Where the facts are established, action will be taken. Anyone who thinks they can get away with violence, intimidation, or vandalism is mistaken. This kind of behavior has no place in our municipality and cannot and will not go unpunished.

I am, of course, open to speaking with you if you have been affected by these events. It is especially important at times like these to listen to one another, share our concerns, and find solutions together. I would also like to hear from the young people themselves about how they experienced this evening. What went wrong? What did they see? And what do they think is needed to ensure that everyone feels safe during events? Our door is open for that. Dreumel is known for its sense of community and hospitality. Let’s not allow this incident to define us, but rather let’s show what makes our community strong: respect for one another and taking responsibility together.
