Assistance, institution, or shelter

What is it?

If you are 21 years of age or older and are going to a care facility, nursing home, rehabilitation clinic, or other institution for more than 3 months, you can apply for social assistance benefits from the municipality. These social assistance benefits consist of pocket money and clothing allowance.

If you are already receiving social assistance when you move into the institution or residential care facility, your social assistance benefit will be reduced. This is because you will no longer have to pay for certain costs (such as food) yourself.

How does it work?

The following conditions apply when applying for assistance in an institution or residential facility:

  • You are 21 years of age or older.
  • You are Dutch or equivalent. You are considered equivalent to a Dutch citizen if you come from an EU country, Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland, or Switzerland. You are also considered equivalent if you have a valid residence permit or are otherwise legally permitted to live in the Netherlands.
  • You live in the Netherlands.
  • You have no or insufficient income of your own.
  • You have no or insufficient equity. This includes your savings, home, and car.
  • You cannot receive any other benefits, such as unemployment benefits or disability benefits.
  • The institution where you are staying is not a prison or a secure psychiatric hospital.

What should I do?

Are you 21 years of age or older? Then you must submit your applications to Werkzaak Rivierenland.
