Bibob investigation
What is it?
Bibob is an acronym for: Promotion of Integrity Assessments by Public Administration.
The municipality may conduct a Bibob investigation. This happens if you:
- applies for a permit
- applies for a grant
- enters into a real estate transaction with the municipality
The municipality uses this process to verify that the application or purchase is not being used for criminal activities. If the investigation reveals that this might be the case—or that it has happened in the past—the municipality may reject your application or purchase.
How does it work?
The Bibob investigation begins with an inquiry conducted by the municipality itself. If that inquiry indicates a risk of criminal activity, the municipality seeks advice from the National Bibob Office (LBB). This office investigates public and non-public sources related to you and your business associates. The LBB then provides its recommendation to the municipality.
In their investigations, LBB staff strive to infringe as little as possible on your privacy and that of your business associates.
What to do?
Are you submitting an application or making a purchase? If so, you may need to fill out a special Bibob form. The municipality will review this. If the municipality has any doubts, it will seek advice from the National Bibob Office. If that happens, you will be notified. You cannot appeal this decision. Would you like to withdraw your application or purchase? You may do so.
What to bring?
What you need varies depending on the application or purchase. When you submit an application or make a purchase, you will receive a Bibob form. This form explains what you need to do and what you need to provide to get the review started.
How long does it take?
The duration of the review varies depending on the application. You will receive a personal notification regarding this.
If a municipality requests a recommendation from the National Bibob Office, the Office must provide its recommendation to the municipality within 8 weeks. This deadline may be extended once by 4 weeks.
