Renovation of Begoniastraat in Beneden-Leeuwen

Begoniastraat in Beneden-Leeuwen in need of a facelift.

The main services we provide:

  • replacement of the sewer system
  • Installing a new sewer line to drain rainwater
  • replacing the plants in the flower beds
  • planting new and more trees
  • repairing the road surface while reusing the existing pavers as much as possible
  • repairing the sidewalks with new tiles

Preliminary design

We want to make some changes to the street.

  • We are building a sidewalk along the entire length of the street on both sides
  • We are removing the narrow sections of the street
  • The number of parking spaces will remain the same. The layout will change. Parking will be perpendicular on grass pavers and parallel in trapezoidal spaces.
  • We build trapezoidal driveways. This makes it easier to drive in and out.

The preliminary design drawing shows what this will look like. By the way, the street will remain one-way.

Final design

You had until Sunday, May 31, to submit feedback on the preliminary design using the feedback form. We compiled all feedback from local residents into a feedback report. In this report, you can also read our response to that feedback.

Response Memorandum on Begoniastraat

We would like to request that the slope of our driveway remain the same as it was granted to us in 1993 and as requested for the construction of our carport. This slope is particularly important on the right side of our carport, as viewed from the street; otherwise, we will not be able to park our car under the carport. We are enclosing two attachments here.
However, we request that the green strip in front of our home be made the same size as the one on the left side, as viewed from the street. This is slightly smaller than currently indicated on the preliminary sketch, so that we can continue to park at least three smaller cars from house numbers 24 through 30, given the severe parking shortage on our street.

Moving the green strip further toward Rozenstraat would be better for us, given the inconvenience caused by the lamppost and the tree as things stand now; back in 1993, we were not allowed to move this tree and lamppost.

We also have a question about whether digging will be required in the front yard for the installation of a stormwater drainage system:
. We’d also like to know when the work will begin and how long it will take.

- There is sufficient space for the driveways. In the case of your driveway, the new layout will actually make things easier. The tree with the green area directly in front of your driveway will be removed.
- A parking space is 6 meters long. Making a parking lane slightly longer does not create any additional spaces.
- The street is narrow. Space is needed for traffic, pedestrians, and greenery. The remaining space is reserved for parking, which will provide just as many parking spots as there are now. When all of these are occupied, there will be ample opportunity to park on both Rozenstraat and Van Haagenstraat, either along the road or in the designated spaces.
- We will remove the tree in front of your driveway. New streetlights will be installed in other locations.
- Diverting rainwater from your roof is outside the scope of this project. 
- Work will begin after the construction industry’s summer break. It will take about 8 weeks, just like on Jasmijnstraat.

- Green spaces and trees are very important on this street. They provide shade on hot days and retain water during droughts.
- Driveways on the street have a different paving pattern and different pavers than the parking lanes. This ensures clear differentiation.
- If a car is parked on a driveway, you can submit a report via the BuitenBeter so we can take action.
We think it’s a shame that the trees are going to be cut down. Everyone is talking about greening and how greenery helps keep things cool. That’s why we’re against cutting down these trees....
We believe they are beautiful, healthy trees		- The trees have been assessed by our municipality’s parks and recreation department. Most of them have a limited life expectancy, which is further reduced by excavation work. That is why we have decided to establish a new tree structure along the street.
- The chestnut tree on Van Haagenstraat has been reassessed and will remain in place. 
- Green spaces and trees are extremely important in the street. They provide shade on hot days and retain water during droughts. That is why we will replant at least as many trees as we remove.
I don't think the design is bad, but there's another tree between nos. 11 and 13 that isn't shown on the drawing—it will remain there.- It's true that there is no tree in the preliminary design. We had forgotten about it. We will remove this tree.

Next steps: tree removal

We expect to begin the work after the construction industry’s summer break. You will receive a letter about this by then.
We will remove the trees before the excavation work begins. You can see which trees these are on the drawings. We will do this in early July.
