As a municipality, we take photos and videos of what’s happening in our community and the work we do. On this page, you can read more about the use of photos and videos.

Photos and video recordings are considered personal data under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Why do we take photos and videos?
Photos and video footage show what’s happening in our municipality and what we do as a municipality. For example, we organize various meetings on a range of topics and projects. We also sometimes take photos and video footage of events in our municipality. This includes activities we carry out in public spaces: royal honors, commemorations, openings, and festive gatherings, roadwork, as well as meetings of the municipal council, committee members, and the mayor and aldermen.
We use the photos and video footage solely for our own communications
Such as brochures, posters, the website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We do not share these photos and video recordings with other organizations or companies. We retain these photos and video recordings for up to five years. After that, they are either destroyed or archived if they have archival value.
When do we ask for your consent?
If you are the only person or one of only a few people clearly visible in the photo or video, we will ask for your permission to use it. The photographer will provide you with a consent form from the municipality. On this form, you can indicate whether we may use the photo or video. For children under 16, we ask their parents or legal guardians for permission. You are not required to give consent, and you may withdraw your consent at any time. When do we not ask for your consent?
In some cases, we are unable to ask everyone for their personal consent. For example, you may be in a photo or video with many other people. You may also appear in a photo or video as a passerby. We always clearly indicate in advance that photos or videos are being taken. If you do not wish to be in a photo or video, please let us know. We will then take this into account. We handle your personal data with the utmost care. We pay close attention to the contexts in which we use these types of photos and video recordings.
Objection to a photograph or video recording
Have you given permission for the use of a photo in which you appear, but would like to revoke that permission? Or do you object to a photo we have taken of you? Would you like us to remove a photo in which you appear? If so, please contact us at FG@westmaasenwaal.nl.
Complaints
We have a Data Protection Officer. If you have any complaints, please contact us directly at FG@westmaasenwaal.nl. You may also file a complaint with the national supervisory authority, the Dutch Data Protection Authority: www.autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl.
