Fire blight is a plant disease that is widespread in large parts of the Netherlands. Every year, the disease causes damage to plants and trees throughout the country. This includes tree nurseries and fruit farms, as well as public and private green spaces. The disease spreads easily to other susceptible plants.

In the Netherlands, measures are in place that apply in buffer zones. This is to prevent the spread of fire blight. These zones are legally established (mainly around tree nurseries and fruit growers). Within these zones, fire blight control is mandatory. In addition, a number of susceptible plants (such as hawthorn) may not be planted.
