Fire blight
Fire blight is a plant disease that is widespread throughout much of the Netherlands. Every year, the disease causes damage to plants and trees across the country—in tree nurseries and fruit orchards, as well as in public and private green spaces. The disease spreads easily to other susceptible plants.
In the Netherlands, measures have been put in place that apply within buffer zones. This is to prevent the spread of fire blight. These zones are established by law (primarily around tree nurseries and fruit growers). Within these zones, fire blight control is mandatory. In addition, certain susceptible plants (such as hawthorn) may not be planted.
