400 people interested in 'Building a new neighborhood' in Beneden-Leeuwen
On August 27, 400 residents gathered to discuss the future of De Hey Acker. The old nursing home is making way for a new neighborhood.

On Wednesday, August 27, no fewer than 400 people attended the event about the future of the De Hey Acker site on Rozenstraat in Beneden-Leeuwen. The evening was an initiative of Woonstichting De Kernen, the municipality of West Maas en Waal, and Zorggroep Maas & Waal. The aim was to inspire residents and stakeholders and to gather ideas about the new use of this site.
The old nursing home still stands on the site. The intention is to develop a new neighborhood here. Residents have been called upon, through newsletters and the newspaper, among other things, to contribute their ideas and thus help build a pleasant neighborhood and a new residential future. The goal is to build a strong community.
Plenty of interest and curiosity
The large turnout and discussions led the initiators to conclude that there is a great deal of interest and curiosity. The initiators were also able to explain why they want to develop this project in this way.
In Beneden-Leeuwen, there is a growing group of elderly people but few suitable homes and not enough space for young people. Now is the time to make a difference and work on creating a neighborhood where people look out for each other.
What next?
The kick-off has taken place. The initiators will review the responses from those present and identify a common thread. At the information evening, residents who want to contribute ideas and discuss the plan development were able to sign up for workshops that will start in the fall. The exact details are still being worked out. One of the conditions is that people want to actively contribute ideas in the interest of the entire village. Participation in the workshops does not guarantee a home in the new neighborhood.
